Evening by Alphonse Mucha
Evening is another classic Mucha illustration with his typical full length portrait of a stylish, classicly dressed woman. As with most other of his prints there is great detail throughout the piece, with a detailed frame surrounding the themed background that sits pleasantly behind the female who is the main intended focus of the painting. The theme in this case is the title itself, Evening, with other themes covered by Mucha including Day, Morning, and each of the four seasons.
Alphonse Mucha was born in mid-19th century Moravia in the Austrian Empire and went on to to receive exceptional academic training at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi. Besides his popular series of poster prints there were also significant contributions within The Slav Epic (Slovanská epopej) which was a host of paintings exhibited together to portray the history of Czech and slavic people throughout his own artistic eye.
Summer is featured above and is another classic Mucha painting with light pastel tones giving a highly feminine look that will appeal to many. There is always a certain classic charm and style to his paintings and Summer continues this consistency. The single biggest influence on the approach taken by Mucha with in his paintings was the art movement of Neoclassicism which he was to study intently and learn from some of it's greatest exponents who would use influences from Ancient Greece and Rome alongside other Western classical art styles.
Night covers this topic with a darker scene that contrasts noticeably from Mucha's others in this series which included Morning. Whilst darker in colour, Night still avoids giving a negative mood and instead is calming which might appeal to different tastes to his other brighter prints. Other than with this occasional shift in tone, there is very little change throughout his series of poster prints and for those interested in seeing other styles from Mucha, please see his series of paintings that covered the history of slavic people which was entitled The Slav Epic (Slovanská epopej).
